The Vale of Glamorgan is holding a consultation day at The Gathering Place, St Athan to look at how active travel can be promoted in the area. This is in line with the Welsh Governments Active Travel (Wales) Act.
The Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013 is landmark Welsh law to make it easier for people to walk and cycle in Wales. The Act requires Welsh ministers to publish annual reports on the amount of active travel journeys are made in Wales. The annual report also updates on progress of the Act’s implementation since it began on 25 September 2014.The Act – which is considered to be a world first – makes it a legal requirement for local authorities in Wales to map and plan for suitable routes for active travel, and to build and improve their infrastructure for walking and cycling every year. It creates new duties for highways authorities to consider the needs of walkers and cyclists and make better provision for them. It also requires both the Welsh Government and local authorities to promote walking and cycling as a mode of transport
However, this would also be a good chance to meet the team that can help with local road safety issues, which in the St Athan Community Council consultation earlier this year was a big draw back to residents walking and cycling in the area.
